Joy in Stress...can it be?

Posted by Todd Cullen on 11/21/14 @ 11:24 AM

Have you ever had anyone tell you that their life is stress free?

Did you believe them? What in the world did they do to avoid stress? Do they even have a life?

If we are really honest we must admit that if we have breath to live, at some level we have stress. But some people handle stress really well. I’ve often wondered why some people handle stress well and other explode! I’m sure that there are many reasons but I believe that a major factor in handling stress well, at least for the Christ-follower, is spiritual in nature.

This Sunday, as we close our current series, It’s All Good, we’ll consider what we can do to experience joy even when we are stressed. Yes, I just suggested that joy and stress CAN co-exist. I believe Paul suggests the same thing in his letter called Philippians.

Please don’t miss this last installment of It’s All Good on Sunday at 9:30 or 11:00. Read Philippians 4 before you come. Get introspective and consider how you handle stress in your own life. Let me and the other readers of this blog know how you respond to stress, some of your coping mechanisms and an example of a time you responded well to a stressful situation.

I’ll see you on Sunday!

Joy in Success - What Do YOU Think?

Posted by Todd Cullen on 11/14/14 @ 9:25 AM

Many people take pleasure in the work they do and the accomplishments they achieve in life.

Admittedly, I am one of those people. You don’t have to be a type “A” personality, or extremely goal-driven, or an overly ambitious person to delight in accolades, accomplishment and success in life. However, I wonder how thin the line is between enjoying those things and striving to find lasting joy in those things.

What do YOU think? Is it important for us to receive joy from accomplishments (career, educational, spiritual, etc.) in life? How much should that shape the people we are? Have you ever had a time in your life where your success defined you? I’d love to hear what you think and just like last week feel free to comment below and get the discussion going.

Also, I want to challenge you to read Philippians 3 and don't miss Part 3 of It's All Good this Sunday at 9:30 or 11:00! I'll see you there!

Joy vs. Happiness - YOUR thoughts

Posted by Todd Cullen on 11/07/14 @ 11:16 AM

Last Sunday in our new series I made the statement that happiness and joy are not the same thing.

I asserted that happiness is temporary and based on our current situation or circumstances but joy is based on who we are in Christ. I said that happiness can come quickly and go just as quickly; I said that joy is lasting.

But I want to hear what YOU think. Do you think that happiness and joy are the same thing? In your own life are happiness and joy difficult to differentiate or is there a clear distinction between the two? Let me know if there was a time in your life when you experienced either one and you knew the difference.

Join in the discussion and let me know YOUR thoughts by commenting on this blog. Also, in preparation for this coming Sunday read Philippians 2 as we continue our study through the book of Philippians in our series It’s All Good. I’ll see you on Sunday.

Thanks Frank. I hope you guys had a great trip! I've heard it said that the longest distance in the world is the 12 inches from the head to the heart. Trust is a massive part of choosing joy, isn't it! We can know it in our minds, but trusting God for joy with our heart is quite another thing. My prayer for you is that you trust God in all things, as Philippians encourages us to do. Thanks for your thoughts.

Thanks Andy. Yes, joy is deeper and much more meaningful. And when we find joy in Jesus it's lasting. I'll take joy over happiness ALL DAY LONG!

As a golfer, I loved the golf shot analogy. If I hit a good shot, I usually say "sweet". Maybe I should say "joy"! Thanks for your input!

Happiness comes in all shapes and sizes but it is always active and frisky. Happiness beats the drum of the soul and joy bubbles up. Tears of something bigger than us results. This process happens sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly. But, joy is deeper, more centered and it feels really really good. Joy touches something that happiness cannot. Joy can be quiet or come mixed with happiness, energy and that “YES!!!!” feeling. Joy is always contentment…that life is good…there is a God. Joy hits that “sweet spot” way inside…like a good golf shot….a base hit…the flow. And I have a granddaughter named Joy.

We are off to Atlanta this weekend (Abagail's first birthday) party! At my age; I have experienced both! It took the trip from my head to my heart to fully grasp the difference. Twenty something years ago as I walked through my brother's three year illness and death with him; I came to clearly understand the underlying joy and peace gained by allowing Jesus to take over my life completely. Understand this: There are still many times of struggle, and circumstances are not always what I would like them to be, but trusting in God, who engineers those circumstances, is where my joy comes from. As someone said; "I am always content with what happens, for I think what God chooses is better than what I choose."
