Recently I was at Starbucks and the cheerful barista handed me my tall iced skinny caramel macchiato in their new cups which have no straw. As she handed it to me I said, “Oh, This is great! Thanks!” She looked at me kind of strange and said, “Really? Everybody’s been pretty mad all day because they haven’t gotten their straw.” I looked at her and kindly said, “It’s not about the straw. People are just angry.” She laughed and I drove away.
After that happened, I started thinking about where we are right now as a culture. It doesn’t really take much for us to be easily angered. The restaurant we want to go to has different hours and no outdoor seating. We’re not happy. For the beginning of our Covid quarantine, it was all about not finding toilet paper and cleaning supplies. We have to face the fact that right now as a culture, we are easily angered and it doesn’t take much for us to be very vocal in our frustration.
One of the greatest things about worship and focusing your heart and mind on God, especially through song, is that it’s really hard to be angry at the same time. As we have talked about so many times at Hilton Head Island Community Church, worship is a verb. It’s an action. When we actively submit every thought captive to God and who He is, it is difficult to stay in a frustrated mindset. It puts our hearts and minds in a place that transcends our situation and focuses on Him.
Below are some great verses of promise of God's goodness. I encourage you to read over these verses and maybe add your favorites to this list! Reading and meditating on the promises of God brings peace that we sometime just can't explain based on our circumstances. Keep verses of promise like these always nearby when you are struggling to remember God's goodness to remind you that He is good!
Also, here is a great playlist of songs on Spotify that I have really enjoyed listening to and mediating on these past few months.
Dear friend, take time and actively refocus your heart and mind on the goodness of God right now. Grateful hearts draw us away from worry, anger and fear into His grace that is always there for us anytime.
...especially when you’re tempted to be angry about a straw.
